Polyplumb under floor central heating can be used on suspended floors in a number of ways. Pipe can either be laid along the joists using double heat spreader plates, or across joists on battens using single heat spreader pates. The use of heat spreader plates is recommended as they assist the response time and heat spread.

Alternatively, a pipe only system can be used that doesn’t require heat spreader plates. However, the heat output on pipe only systems won’t be as effective. The pipe only application would be suitable in areas where the heating response is less important, e.g. bedrooms, and is not recommended in living spaces or above unheated spaces, e.g. rooms above garages. Laying a weak dry mix screed, approximately 25mm thick, between the joists, can enhance the effectiveness of pipe only systems. In order to apply this extra support may be required below the insulation. Therefore, you should consult a structural engineer to confirm suitability prior to carrying out any work.

In all instances standard tongue and groove floorboard can be laid above the system.
